Mission

The mental health system has failed to help people with serious mental illness in meaningful ways to achieve a higher level of integration that includes independent living, paid work and community involvement. City Voices, since it is run by people with mental illnesses at all levels of the organization, will work to empower the mentally ill through peer-support and self-help. The difference between this new organization and others is that former psychiatric patients have become professional service providers and trainers for their peers.

1. New York City Voices newsletter that has the appearance of a tabloid newspaper, the only one of its kind by and for the mentally ill. Seven thousand in print and growing.
2. www.nycvoices.org with a worldwide reach and archive of all articles that appeared in NYC Voices since its inception in 1997.
3. Community building events such as conferences on the arts and alternative healing such as meditation, dance and other artforms that supplement traditional treatment modalities as well as educational and entertainment events relevant to the mentally ill.
4. Peer training program in computers and workplace skills that involves the mentally ill as trainers training their peers in Internet research, word processing, spreadsheets, sales, organizational skills, office technology and so forth.
