Mission

Grounded in Zen Buddhism, the mission of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care is to transform the culture of care through contemplative practice, meeting illness, aging and death with wisdom and compassion. Inspired by the vision of Co-Founders, Sensei Chodo Robert Campbell and Sensei Koshin Paley Ellison, NYZC has proven itself a leader in developing a contemplative approach to care. Now entering its fourteenth year, NYZC dares to be brave and creative, becoming intimate with our own suffering in order to alleviate the suffering of others.

Through experiential learning and clinical training you will develop skillful means to support those in need of care when facing illness, old age and death.

The Contemplative Medicine Fellowship is a twelve-month training for physicians (MD and DO), advanced practice registered nurses (NP & CNM), and physician assistants who want to lead change in the culture of care. The fellowship is designed to immerse participants in the true experience of the alleviation of suffering in their personal and professional lives.

The core training of contemplative medicine is based on the practices of wisdom, ethics, and contentment as prescribed by the historical Buddha 2,600 years ago.

Together fellows explore how to integrate and apply these foundational understandings to all relationships. This innovative program cultivates and supports leaders among fellows committed to addressing the real and significant challenges in caring for the suffering world.
