Mission

VSA arts of New Jersey is part of the international VSA arts network, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. VSA arts is designated by Congress as the national coordinating agency for arts programs for individuals with disabilities. Founded in New Jersey in 1978 and formerly named Very Special Arts New Jersey, the agency is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities through cultural, educational, and recreational programming in the arts.

VSA arts of New Jersey programs include:
Unlimited Potential Theater Company (UPTCo) - touring ensemble of actors with and without disabilities

NJ Wordsmith Competition - writing competition for adults with and without disabilities; selected works are featured at a Reader's Theater performed by UPTCo members

Art Achievement Awards - recognizing young people with disabilities, educators, and administrators; award recipients become candidates for the distinguished NJ Governor's Award in Arts Education

Parent/Child Workshops in Music and Art for Children with Autism - weekly sessions, meeting in locations throughout NJ to enhance communication, social, and cognitive skills of children with autism through the arts

Art Par Excellence - statewide touring exhibit featuring artwork by students with disabilities

Mercer County Arts Institute - workshops in art, music, and theater for young people with disabilities

EXPOSURE - visual arts program for adults who are blind or have a visual impairment

Arts Festivals - performances, exhibits, and workshops that focus on the artistic involvement of people with disabilities

Storyteller Players & Possibility Players - theater projects for adults with developmental disabilities

NJ Arts Access Task Force - serving as a member agency of this advisory committee that assists arts organizations in making their programs and facilities accessible to people with disabilities

Resource and referral services - responding to information requests on programming, adaptations and accommodations in the arts for individuals with disabilities

Leadership training programs - through workshops and conferences
