Farmland and Forest Conservation

The Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is a nonprofit, community-supported land conservancy founded by farmers in 1990, To date, ASA has assisted 140 farm families in conserving 24,644 acres of productive farm and forested lands in Washington and Rensselaer counties in the Upper Hudson River Valley of New York State.

Population(s) Served

ASA's Make A Connection with the Land Series consists of 15 - 18 community prorams offered to area residents and urban communities including the City of Troy, New York. Farm Photography for Kids, Gleaning for Local Food Pantries, Nature Hikes, Farm Tours, and Educational Workshops are some of the ways ASA connects with our community.

Population(s) Served

ASA offers 12 - 15 workshops and programs annually for farmers and landowners. Popular topics have been estate planning, business training for beginning farmers, wholesale marketing opportunities, regenerative farming practices, forest management safety, and peer-to-peer mentoring. ASA also serves as a resource by matching beginning farmers seeking land with landowners looking to lease or transfer their land to the next generation through the Hudson Valley Farmlink Network.

Population(s) Served

As the number of protected properties grows, so does ASA's responsibility to steward these properties in perpetuity. A key strategy in upholding easement terms and minimizing easement violations is to cultivate and maintain good relationships with landowners. ASA offers workshops for landowners on topics such as pond, forest and streambank management.
