Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Drowning Prevention
Drowning is a leading cause of death for children four and under and a second leading cause of accidental death for children 15 and younger. However children who learn to swim are 88 percent less likely to drown than those who do not. The Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation awards grants to swim lesson providers, such as YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, camps serving low-income families, and local recreation departments, to provide free or low cost swim lessons to children from families who may otherwise not be able to afford them. We also provide funding to help support lifeguard trainings. The foundation primarily make grants in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Florida.
The Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation also works with partners, such as children's hospitals, fire departments, schools and youth-serving organizations, throughout the country who utilize our Stewie the Duck books in their drowning prevention efforts.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Stew Leonard III Children's Charities (aka Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation) is working to end accidental drownings. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, drowning is a leading cause of death for children four and under. In addition, each year in the U.S nearly 4,000 people drown, or 11 people a day.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Children who take swimming lessons are 88 percent less likely to drown than those who do not. Our organization works to increase awareness about how to be safe around the water. Key strategies include always assigning an adult water water to monitor children in and around the water; take swimming lessons to learn how to swim; and always wear a US Coast Guard-approved flotation device when learning to swim or out on in open water.
Since 1992, Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation has provided $3 million in grants to swim lesson providers to fund hundreds of thousands of free or low-cost swimming lessons for children who may otherwise not have access and thousands of lifeguard certifications in an effort to prevent accidental drownings.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1992, Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation has provided $3 million in grants to swim lesson providers to fund hundreds of thousands of free or low-cost swimming lessons for children who may otherwise not have access and thousands of lifeguard certifications in an effort to prevent accidental drownings.
