Overview

Self-reported by organization

Studies show children from economically disadvantaged families start out less skilled than their peers but after a year of quality preschool education, they show great success in closing this achievement gap. Teacher progress reports are completed at the end of each school year, assessing the child's growth and addressing developmental issues that have been identified. The reports from our partnership schools for the 2015-2016 school year show that after a year of high quality preschool education, there is clear evidence of strong commitment to their education and confirmation that children from economically disadvantaged families can achieve great success:
 94% on or above grade level in cognitive development at year end, a 54 percentage point increase from the start of the year
 93% on or above grade level in emotional development at year end, a 46 percentage point increase from the start of the year
 91% on or above grade level in social development at year end, a 51 percentage point increase from the start of the year
 Almost 90% of the parents were assessed as having at least average participation involved in their child's classroom activities.

In a recent tracking study of our oldest alumni and their families, results gathered indicated that these children have graduated high school and enrolled in college or are on track to do so. In addition, we find these young people are involved in sports and/or in the arts and many are involved in service to their communities. We are tremendously gratified by these results. These findings affirm Preschool Advantage plays an essential role in the community by providing a solid educational foundation for local children to have a successful future.

Funding of Preschool

Preschool Advantage is an innovator in providing access to quality early childhood education programs. The lack of sources of assistance for working families unable to support the cost of preschool led to the founding of Preschool Advantage in Morristown in 1995. To date, we have funded over 1,000 half-day preschool tuitions since our inception.

The first years of a child’s life are critical to laying the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. Early childhood education sets the stage for future growth and propels children onto their educational paths. Despite the undeniable importance of a solid educational start, many local children have no means to attend preschool. Preschool Advantage serves the population of struggling families who do not qualify for government funded programs like Head Start because they earn above the poverty level, but are still earning below the level of sustainability for our region. These families simply cannot afford the cost of a preschool for their child, thus hindering the child’s success and opportunities later in life. Preschool Advantage funds children with special needs and families living in shelters, with an illness or disability, job loss, and low income. Approximately 76% of Preschool Advantage’s constituency consists of minority children and approximately 43% live in single parent homes.
