Mission

Endangered species and the wild lands they need to flourish can only be saved if the effort to save them creates an immediate economic advantage to the people who live there. We work in collaboration with existing wildlife organizations whose approach to conservation makes local communities the beneficiaries and custodians of conservation efforts. We focus on "conservation enterprises" economically and ecologically sustainable businesses that improve the economic well being of the local communities, help protect the environment, and promote economic alternatives to development. We also focus on cultural preservation -- for its own sake, but also because indigenous people live in ways that reflect a conservation ethic and a perception of people as part of a wider community of life and nature. A key to conservation may be through the cultural survival of these peoples, so AFTA helps these cultures survive by supporting their art.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

AFTA's flagship program is Art for the Animals', an education and development program that raises funds for wildlife conservation through donation gift packages and folk art donor thank you premiums.

The Art for the Animals' catalog offers "donation packages" through which consumer can contribute to one of the participating wildlife organizations. African Wildlife Foundation, Wildlife Trust, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Smithsonians National Zoological Park (Friends of the National Zoo) International Crane Foundation, International Snow Leopard Trust, Lemur Conservation Foundation, Michoacan Reforestation Fund, Project Seahorse, Wild Camel Protection Foundation currently participate in the program.

When a consumer makes a donation through one of these packages, s/he receives a handcrafted piece of folk art as a premium for the donation. The folk art generally represents the featured animal and is crafted by local artisans. The program's goal is to:

*Raise funds for wildlife and nature conservancy organizations.

*Raise consumer awareness of environmental issues through reviews of endangered species and their ecosystems.

*Create a unique, self-fulfilling, culturally sensitive and potentially broad market for indigenous art by offering specific pieces as donor premiums;

*Raise consumer awareness of indigenous peoples to help them preserve their culture.

* Turn a bit of holiday consumerism into conservationism
