The Academy of Natural Sciences Programs

Museum Education and Exhibits--Operation of a public natural history museum, offering public outreach and education programs that span pre-school to post-graduate levels. Scientific Research--Systematics research focuses on advancing our knowledge of traditional disciplines of botany, icythyology, malacology, ornithology, and paleontology, using the Academy's outstanding collection of more than 17 million natural history specimens and artififacts as well as new technologies such as DNA molecular analysis, and field work in little-studied locations around the world. Environmental Research-The Patrick Center for Environmental Research studies the health of freshwater ecological systems--from streams, lakes, estuaries and entire watersheds, including new management techniques for conservation of wildlife and water quality. Library--Operation of a natural science library to inform current research, including a rare book collection and archives spanning 400 years. Education Programs that annually touch nearly 100,000 children and adults, advancing science literacy and environmental stewardship.
