What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Youth Development
The YMCA has programs for children of all ages and, thanks to generous financial assistance, all families can enroll their kiddos!
High School/College Prep: We work with young adults so that they enter high school, college, or the workforce ready to succeed! We offer SAT prep, career training, summer learning, and personal tutoring!
Pre-K For All: Our branches have award-winning Pre-K programs for all families! Thanks to generous donations, we enroll kiddos for free or reduced cost, so all children can enter kindergarten ready to learn!
Summer Camp: Our camps across the county give kiddos chances to make new friends and spend time with old ones over enriching outdoor and nature-based activities, such as rock climbing, archery, hikes, lodges, swimming, and more.
Youth Sports: We offer soccer, flag football, volleyball, Nerf tag, basketball, fencing, volleyball, and more!
Healthy Living
We're more than just a gym, but we still have all you need to live your healthiest life possible!
Wellness Center: Our Wellness Center is fully outfitted to meet the health goals of individuals from all walks of life, equipped with free weights, treadmills, strength machines, resistance bands, basketball courts, and indoor and outdoor pools.
Professional Guidance: Our staff must complete extensive training and certifications so that they can deliver comprehensive health and exercise guidance to members, including personal training, nutrition coaching, group exercise, virtual classes, and wellness orientations.
Aquatics: We offer Safety Around Water classes, swim lessons for youth and adults, water aerobics for older adults, world-class swim teams, and of course, indoor and outdoors pools for recreational use.
Chronic Disease Management: We have free or affordable programs for individuals with or recovering from cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, and more!
New American Welcome Center
In January of 2018, the national YMCA organization honored the YMCA of York and York County as one of the fifteen YMCAs to expand its community service work, granting it the title of YMCA New American Welcoming Center and creating a culture of inclusivity for all individuals and their families. In 2021, the New American Welcome Center expanded into Lancaster and is continuing its inspiring work in that community as part of the merged YMCA of the Roses.
The center’s work focuses on three main areas:
1. Case Management Services – Program staff collaborate with other groups and organizations to connect clients with services and programs.
2. Inclusion Building Events - Staff coordinates community-wide cultural events to raise awareness of the diversity and build relationships between different ethnic and cultural groups.
3. Direct Assistance – We provide clients with direct assistance to meet their urgent needs with housing, finances, and employment.
Southern Community Services (SCS)
Southern Community Services (SCS) is a United Way funded program that provides essential social and support services to low and moderate income residents of southern York County.
For more than 30 years, SCS has assisted residents to overcome barriers and achieve a greater level of independence by educating individuals in financial literacy, supporting the application process for various government programs and offering limited direct financial assistance. The program also assists families in crisis through life management programs like short-term counseling, food distribution, back-to-school and holiday programs.
SCS also offers:
- Case Management
- Emergency Food Assistance
- Energy and/or Rental Assistance
- Budget Counseling
- Baby Closet
- Daily Choice Food Pantry
- Homeless Assistance
- Veteran Assistance
- Pet Pantry
- Form Application Assistance
Men's Residence Hall
The YMCA Men’s Residence has been in existence since 1925, offering shelter and a home to men formerly experiencing homeless by giving them affordable housing and access to basic utilities and amenities, such as a kitchen, laundry, and bathroom. The rooms are single occupancy and spread across several floors in the York Branch YMCA in York City, with some of them being reserved for Section 8 and emergency shelter purposes.
In 2005, the YMCA implemented case management services in the Men’s Residence. These services include assisting in job searches, resume writing, budgeting, and connecting to mental health services and other types of counseling, which are all key to creating a sustainable and stable situation, the key to their future.
