What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Member Programming
Each member artist has one solo show during the exhibition year and also participates in group shows, traveling exhibitions and art fairs. For the emerging artist, this is important early exposure. During these first few solo shows, artists are encouraged to take risks and experiment, create focused bodies of work and develop essential skills such as articulating the meaning of the work, marketing and professional installation. In addition, members curate shows, organize educational programs and suggest related programming. The cooperative structure of Vox provides a critical platform for learning essential career skills and gaining arts management and gallery experience.
Guest Artist and Curator Programming
Vox is dedicated to serving non-member artists, peer organizations and emerging curators through exhibition and collaboration. To this end, Vox has developed the following programs, chosen and curated by the membership:
-One exhibition space within the gallery showcases Guest Artist Exhibitions. Four exhibitions take place each calendar year, showcasing work of relevant national and international artists.
- Vox's Guest Curated Exhibition highlights an emerging curator, once a year, to help him/her hone skills and develop his/her practice. The curator generally programs the entire gallery for a duration of one or two months.
- The Video Lounge was established in 2004 in response to a noted lack of venues in the Philadelphia area showing new, experimental media and in recognition of the increasing importance of technology and innovation in art practices.
- Juried Group Exhibitions take place annually, juried by outside curators and/or artists chosen by Vox members, and feature a wide range of emerging artists.
- Vox participates in Exchange Shows with other alternative, artist-run spaces.
- The newest addition to Vox Populi's programming, the Project Space seeks to serve as a versatile incubation space within the gallery, open to emerging artists, curators, gallerists, designers, and others seeking to pilot a project such as a publication or gallery. The Project Space aims to mitigate risks involved in these upstarts by providing administrative support and the physical space needed to realize discrete projects which have as a primary focus an interest in fostering contemporary visual art, dialogue and debate in Philadelphia.
Gallery Talks
In conjunction with each exhibition, Vox members invite a guest speaker to lead a discussion about the work on view. These invited guests are curators, directors of other organizations, and non-member artists with whom we would like to develop stronger relationships. The events are free and open to the public.
Other
Vox offers its space to other organizations that organize music and film events.
Potential future initiatives (or initiative in planning) include a web-based project space; reading room/library; regular public art exhibition to engage our immediate neighborhood of Trestletown; targeted professional development for artists; one-on-one and group opportunities for artists to liaise with curators from outside of Philadelphia; publications; technical assistance to other alternative art spaces in Philadelphia and the surrounding area; and collaborations with colleagues from other disciplines (musicians, dancers, writers).
Exhibitions
Founded in 1988, Vox Populi is a nonprofit artist collective that supports the work of emerging artists with monthly exhibitions, gallery talks, performances and lectures.
