Mission

Mission Establish public computer centers for underserved communities in order to provide Access to current and future Opportunities. The community centers are designed to provide a multitude of technology training resources at various age and educational levels. The target population is underserved regions containing minority groups where existing technology resources are not available. Our goal is to have the centers eventually run entirely by the community. Our program design empowers communities to expand the technology infrastructure including intellectual capital to uplift the region by supplying quality jobs and the needed technology educational tools to fill these positions.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

There are three core programs at the Center:

1. Install and maintain public computer centers
2. Secondary technology education
3. Adult education/workforce training

Install and maintain public computer centers

From January 2005 to January 2006, Cahuita Computer Center staff installed 25 computer labs and maintained 15 public school computer centers serving 7,500 public school children. Locally trained teachers and technicians maintain these computer labs as part of goal to empower community members to improve public school education. Through gifts in kind we will ship an additional 250 computers to serve more schools in need and to maintain our existing labs.

Secondary Education

Our secondary school program provides computer education for three rural high schools serving 350 students. Our objective is to prepare these young adults to be productive members of the community. In a partnership with the University of Costa Rica and the Ministry of Public Education we are preparing our program for national deployment.

Adult Education

Our adult education program at CCC is a six-part applications series that exposes students to Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Internet, and Microsoft Front Page. Each course is eight hours per week: four for lecture and four for practice, and each class is five weeks. One teacher and one teacher?s assistant is assigned for approximately every 20 students. Students are also able to enroll in a one-year computer repair course or more advanced courses such as introduction to computer programming and computer networking.

CCC staff helps students obtain employment upon completion of the program. Students receive a completion certificate accredited by the Ministry of Public education Costa Rica and recommendation letters per request. Staff also attempts to match students to jobs through the use of its growing data bank of regional and national companies seeking workers with computer skills.
