Research Center

The five-story ACOR building is the only purpose-built research center of its kind in the Near East. Facilities include hostel rooms and apartments that accommodate over 40 persons, living and dining space, offices and workrooms for resident scholars, a lecture hall, a conservation lab, a darkroom, and storage space for artifacts and equipment. The library, open to the public, holds over 40,000 volumes and periodicals as well as an extensive map collection. ACOR offers fellowships and support to approximately 22 undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral scholars annually. Furthermore, ACOR, in cooperation with the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, is involved in the excavation and restoration of several archaeological sites. These projects, funded by USAID, have included the development of JADIS, a catalogue of over 10,000 archaeological sites in Jordan; the restoration of the Great Temple of Amman; excavation and restoration of a Byzantine church with mosaics at Petra; sponsorship of the conservation and publication of a cache of Byzantine papyrus scrolls found in the Byzantine church; and the creation of archaeological parks in Madaba and Aqaba.
