Clearwater Trout Unlimited

aka Clearwater TU   |   Schenectady, NY   |  www.clearwatertu.org

Mission

Founded in 1959, TU is the leading conservation organization dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring, North America's trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds. Our 150,000 members are organized into 400 local chapters nationwide. These volunteer chapters are the "watchdogs" of their local rivers and streams. They conduct stream restoration projects, monitor legislation, and fight for "fish friendly" policies with state and local officials. Through its Washington DC-based national headquarters, TU conducts valuable scientific and economic research to foster more enlightened trout and salmon management practices, lobbies to strengthen environmental legislation like the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act, and provides a voice for its 150,000 members.

Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited's mission is to conserve, protect and restore the Capital Region's (New York) trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Education

Trout in the Classroom is a program where students raise trout in a fish tank in their classroom and in the process learn about watersheds, ecosystems, water quality, the fragility of the trout's world, and how to be environmental stewards.

The chapter organizes fly fishing and fly tying classes for the general public as well as for disadvantaged youths. The chapter also holds fishing outings people going through physical rehabilitation.

Population(s) Served

We are the first line of defense for our home waters, which are threatened by loss and degradation of habitat. Our members visit these home waters and in the process become knowledgeable about the threats and restoration opportunities. We partner with other conservation organizations, state and local governments and individuals to protect and restore a long list of local streams.

Population(s) Served

The chapter engages in outreach activities to help further our mission to conserve, protect, and restore the New York Capital Region’s trout and salmon fisheries and their watersheds.
