Mission Statement

Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS) is a global feminist organization that distills and disseminates health information from the best scientific research available as well as women's life experiences, so that the individuals and communities we reach can make informed decisions about health, reproduction, and sexuality. OBOS provides trustworthy educational resources worldwide, advocates for equitable public policies, and facilitates dialogue to inspire action on the social injustices affecting health and human rights.

Ms. Julie Childers

BIO

Julie Childers is the executive director of Our Bodies Ourselves. Julie, who joined the organization in the spring of 2016, is leading OBOS forward as it enhances the quality and breadth of its online health content, strengthens its global partnerships, and works collaboratively with other women's health organizations in the U.S. to promote women's reproductive and sexual health.

Prior to joining OBOS, Julie served as the vice president for sexuality education at the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, where she led the effort against abstinence-only until marriage education and for a comprehensive sexuality curriculum for middle school students. She also worked at the UCLA Center for the Study of Women, where she managed university-community research partnerships, including “Making Invisible Histories Visible: The June L. Mazer Lesbian Feminist Archive" and “Women's Social Movement Activity in Los Angeles: 1960 – 2000."

Julie holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Boston College, where she was also a research associate with the Media Research and Action Project. Her research focused on third wave women's health organizing in an alternative birth center. At the University of Tulsa, she was the Emily Mumford Scholar in Medicine and Society and co-organized a state level conference on HIV/AIDS. In all her work, Julie seeks to bridge academic and nonprofit efforts for social justice.
