What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

To promote opportunities for young people to experience tall ships firsthand, ASTA directs a wide variety of initiatives that are vital to the preservation and advancement of tall ships and sail training:

1) We manage the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®, a series of tall ships races, port events, and educational activities that occur regularly in ports along both U.S. coasts and in cities throughout the Great Lakes. Each year, 3 to 5 million people experience the tall ships through ASTA-organized events.

2) We organize the annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships, an international gathering of industry professionals and students who meet in ports throughout the U.S. to discuss current trends and vital issues affecting the health and professionalism of tall ships and sail training.

3) We publish the annual directory of sail training vessels "Sail Tall Ships!" that has been the only comprehensive register of vessels and related educational programs for more than 25 years.

4) We award scholarships and grants that give young people the chance to experience life at sea aboard tall ships and that help vessels develop quality sail training programs.

5) We support legislative efforts that support sail training and the preservation of America's maritime heritage.
