What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Protecting Westmoreland County Trout Streams
For 40 years Forbes Trail TU has been protecting Westmoreland County’s troutstreams. In 1973 we began by restoring the Loyalhanna Creek trout fishing after it was ruined by Hurricane Agnes. Since then we have achieved major progress protecting stream banks and creating healthy, publically accessible trout habitat for all to enjoy. Now we are restoring Linn Run in our State Park where acid rain destroyed the native Brook trout population. In 2008 Forbes Trail was named Pennsylvania’s Trout Unlimited Chapter of the Year for that work.
Trout In The Classroom
Trout in the Classroom is the primary youth education program of the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited. Forbes Trail Chapter of Trout Unlimited sponsors five local TIC program and provides funding. School districts and science teachers as well as students benefit this program because it has been designed to help achieve the standards of learning for science and math mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
First Cast Youth Conservatio & Fly Fishing
Boys and girls between 12 and 16 develop fly fishing skills while learning about cold water conservation.
Women and Veterans Fly Fishing
Women and disabled veterans discover the physical and emotional benefits of fly fishing. It provides skill training and mentoring support to make fly fishing and the out-of-doors more approachable & available than they otherwise might have known. It emphasizes how fly fishing can strengthen the body, mindand spirit. It addresses the particular needs and concerns of women recovering from breast cancer, and veterans learning to live with prostheses.
Laurel Highlands Trout Trail - tourism and economic development
The Laurel Highlands of Westmoreland County offer some of the best trout fishing in the East. Our state parks and nearly 5 thousand acres of state forest land provide dozens of publically accessible trout streams. The Laurel Highlands Trout Trail introduces tourists and potential residents to ten of our best.
