Food Pantries and Emergency Food

Through our agencies, we distribute food to 4,200 households across Mercer County. Our agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, abuse and homeless shelters, local churches, after-school programs, low-income day care centers, youth centers, and mental health treatment centers.

The BackPack Program is a nationwide program of Feeding America, which is operated and coordinated by individual Feeding America food banks. The BackPack Program feeds hungry school children on weekends. Eligible children deemed to be chronically hungry receive nutritious and child friendly food items for the weekends, throughout the school year. We currently serve over 900 children in nine school districts across the county.

CSFP or Senior Food Box Program is a federal food program, designed to improve the health of senior citizens. Food for the program is provided by the USDA’s Agency of Food and Nutrition Service.

Currently, the CFWMC's CSFP Program serves 386 seniors in 23 different sites across Mercer County. The sites consist of Income Assisted High Rises for seniors, the Warehouse itself, and many of the food pantries who are member agencies of the CFW. In fact, the Senior Food Box program alleviates some of the financial burden on these pantries. By using the Senior Food Box program to feed their senior clients, pantries can then use the money saved to feed more of the needy in the community.

The Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provides for the responsible distribution of USDA commodities and program funds received by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from USDA allocated to Mercer County.

The CFWMC has been designated by the Mercer County Commissioners as the lead agency for this program. To ensure that all commodities are distributed to eligible residents of Mercer County, the CFWMC, establishes both program and eligibility criteria. A memorandum of understanding is signed between the CFWMC and eligible emergency food assistance pantries.

All pantries must:

· Maintain a process to register eligible clients who receive emergency food assistance.

· Report on a monthly basis to the CFWMC the number of unduplicated individuals served within the category of eligibility.

· Ensure that records will be maintained to track any food items received under TEFAP.

·Shall not discriminate in any fashion in providing assistance to all who are eligible

Harvest Helpings is the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County's fresh produce drop program. The CFWMC started this program in 2016, when we received a $10,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System, or PASS, which connects Pennsylvania farmers to charitable food organizations.
