What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Israel Education and Advocacy
At Hillel Jewish University Center (Hillel JUC), we are constantly creating and providing innovative and educational programs about Israel, shaped around a pluarlistic dialogue. Programs range from advocacy trainings to Israel Shabbatons to cultural events, such as Cafe Ivrit (Hebrew speaking meetings) and immersive experiences, specifically Birthright and Onward.
Shabbat
Each week during the school year, the Hillel Jewish University Center opens its doors so students can celebrate Shabbat as a community. Students lead their own services (all denominations) and then gather together for a community meal. A student committee develops themes and supplemental programs, such as Dessert and Discussion. Each week, anywhere between 125-200 students attend. The cost for this program is $75,000 per year or $2500 per week.
Holocaust Education
The Hillel Jewish University Center (Hillel JUC) offers a wide range of educational programs about the Holocaust and a historical perspective on this extraordinary moment in history. Our programs incorporate a variety of mediums including: film, speaker series and trips to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. This past year, students organized special Shabbat experiences during Kristallnacht and Yom Hashoah.
Jewish Education and Holidays
Throughout the year, the Hillel Jewish University Center (Hillel JUC) hosts over 600 students to celebrate the Jewish holidays, such as the High Holidays and Passover Seders. The Hillel JUC empowers the students with a variety of options for celebrating the holidays, from having a traditional holiday experience in our building to ensuring students have the resources needed to celebrate in their dormitories and apartments. This important program provides students with a connection to Jewish ritual and observance and an opportunity to share their holiday experience with their friends when they're unable to go home to be with their families. The addition of the Senior Jewish Educator will assist in adding depth and educational content to the existing programs.
Campus Superstar
Campus Superstar is an American Idol-like solo singing competition featuring Pittsburgh area college students. Over 150 students audition for 10 spots and the chance to compete in front of an audience of 2,000 people. The winner receives the top prize of $5000 and the second and third place winners receive $1000. Campus Superstar is a spectacular, professionally-produced show, where performers are accompanied by a full band, with all of the "glitz" that one would expect from a concert, Broadway show or... American Idol. The proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales support the programs, activities and the student initiatives of the Hillel JUC.
