What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The 2nd Wave has two currents: an Educational Current (EC) and a Political Current (PC). Our EC empowers the community in the following ways: educating the electorate on the electoral process and providing constituents the requisite tools to effectively communicate with their elected officials. The EC will fulfill some of the needs of the community by providing a systematic naturalization pathway ? including English language classes and American civics classes - for American immigrants in accordance with federal and state guidelines; hosting American cultural education classes as a supplement to ongoing citizenship classes; registering eligible adult citizens to vote; and holding town hall meetings with elected representatives.
The Political Current (PC) will engage the community in the political process by identifying issues unique to specific underrepresented and/or unassimilated voting populations in Illinois. The 2nd Wave will subsequently organize these constituents around their unique issues in order to effectively communicate with elected representatives. The PC will host political forums with elected officials and candidates; establish polling places in geographic areas identified to be in need of more accessible sites; advocate issues on behalf of the community; create and maintain a complete voter history database for the state of Illinois; politically analyze specific districts and races utilizing said voter database and other resources; and endorse candidates for political office based on aforementioned analysis.
Through the education, participation, empowerment, and integration of these subsections of the larger community, American society as a whole will be enriched. The Educational and Political Currents will serve to enhance the democratic process through political communication beginning from the naturalization process and following through to citizenship, voting, and finally, agency of the politically engaged citizenry. Agency is defined as "a person through which power is exerted or an end is achieved," and the vision of The 2nd Wave is to see individuals in the communities described above achieve agency in the long term through active, positive engagement in the democratic process.
