What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Water Safety Education Program
This program is taught by certified lifeguards in various schools and orphanages throughout South India. Children are taught how to be safe around water, how to identify and safely rescue someone in distress, and proper resuscitation techniques. We limit our class size to 10 children for each instructor. This year we aim to reach 3,000 children.
CPR/First Aid Seminar: Volunteers go into businesses throughout South India and teach a 2 hour seminar that covers basic first aid and proper resuscitation techniques. Class size is limited to 10 participants per instructor. We aim to reach 500 employees this year.
Lifeguard Training Program: In this program, certified lifeguard volunteers run a waterfront lifeguarding course where participants learn rescue skills, lifeguard theory, CPR, first aid, and surveillance techniques. Class size is limited to 30. We try to run one class each year.
International Volunteer Service
Swim India’s primary
activity is to provide volunteer service opportunities in the international
community. Swim India arranges two
programs, a Lifeguard Training Program and a Water Safety Education Program
(see below), throughout needy areas in South Asia. Volunteers that are certified by the American
Red Cross in Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instruction, and
Lifeguard Instruction are given an opportunity to fundraise and travel to South
Asia to help teach these programs. The
volunteers come from across Southern Arizona and are taught about South Asian
culture, learn a foreign language (Hindi, Urdu, or Nepali), and receive
advanced lifeguard training such as waterfront lifeguarding and swift water
rescue. The International Volunteer Service helps fulfill Swim India’s
tax-exempt purpose by educating the local Arizona community in another
culture/language and fostering global responsibility. It also helps by providing instructors that
will help save lives on an international level by teaching water safety, first aid,
CPR, and lifeguarding. Swim India
allocates 70% of its time to this activity. It is funded through a number of fundraising programs, personal
donations, and foundation grants.
