Mission

Enrich the World works with communities living in protected areas in developing countries. These protected areas harbor great biodiversity and are often the source of limited freshwater resources for the region. Protected areas also serve as a refuge for marginalized and impoverished human populations that are dependent upon natural resources for their survival.
Our projects are community-centered and based on sustainable living practices through natural resource conservation and management. Each Enrich the World project contains an educational component to promote sustainability. Moreover, all initiatives supported by Enrich the World require direct community participation to create a sense of ownership in each activity. Enrich the World employees are host-country nationals who are mentors and leaders in their community. Enrich the World actively collaborates with local and international organizations working in protected areas to extend the impact of our projects.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Enrich The World's Scholars Program

Enrich The World's Scholars Program was created to support activities that enhance the educational experience of children living within protected areas. Through Enrich The World, student scholars will participate in three kinds of activities that promote continuing education, leadership, creativity, critical thinking and environmental awareness.

Academic Internships Interns will be chosen annually from 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students from the protected area where we are working and who have participated in Enrich The World activities. These interns will be provided an academic stipend to attend high school; an opportunity they would not have without additional support. These students will conduct outreach activities in schools within the protected areas.

These interns will also receive training in leadership and computing skills. Throughout the year, the student's academic progress will be monitored by Enrich The World. Peer Education Interns will receive training in outreach and peer education from Enrich The World staff. They will travel to schools within the protected area and conduct peer environmental and health education programs with the students. These interns will be ambassadors for Enrich The World in the schools and will serve as positive role models for other students who would hope to continue their education.

Community Gardens Program

Enrich The World's community gardens program was created to provide students with a supply of fresh fruits and vegetables and to promote sustainable agriculture within protected areas. Many of the children living within the protected areas have limited food resources at home and suffer from malnutrition. Therefore, community gardens at the school will provide an important supplement to their diet.

Additionally, many of the people living within the protected areas are using farming methods that promote erosion and the pollution of water sources. By incorporating this type of training in primary education, the next generation of farmers will be exposed to sustainable agricultural practices. Environmental Clubs and Camps Enrich The World is creating extracurricular environmental clubs and leading camps for students living within the protected areas. Students participating in these activities will receive additional training in science and the environment. They will also participate in self-esteem building and leadership-training activities.
