Mission

Willow Oak Center for Arts & Learning at Robertson County offers educational opportunities in the arts and humanities to children, youth, and adults, in Robertson County and surrounding areas.  Willow Oak promotes cultural development, global awareness, and the well-being of the community and planet through a variety of educational venues offering quality instruction and opportunities for self-growth and discovery in the performing, visual, folk, and expressive arts for men, women, and children from all walks of life who are lifetime learners open to exploration and growth.

Willow Oak Classes for Children and Adults

Willow Oak offers classes and workshops for children and adults in the visual, performing, folk, and expressive arts. Educational opportunities also include the humanities, such as languages and writing, computers, culinary arts, and wellness.

Population(s) Served

Core art classes in drawing and painting are offered for all ages. Mommy & Me Art begins at age 2. Summer Art Camps for beginning, intermediate and advanced artists are scheduled for grades 2-8, Mon-Fri, 9 am – 3 pm. Classes in calligraphy and Zentangle® are also popular. Painting and pallet parties (fun art) for adults and children are popular on weekends.

The Willow Oak Chorale (grades 7-12 and adult ages) presents 2 performances each year under the direction of Artistic Director Roger Bunch. Under his tutelage, gifted high school students have the opportunity to conduct the chorale and orchestra in performances. Two Children’s Choruses, The Lil' Willow Singers (grades 3-5) and The Might Oak Choir (grades 6-8), are under the direction of Stephanie Edwards. Members of the Chorale performed at Carnegie Hall in 2013 and 2015. Music lessons are offered in voice, piano (classical, jazz and rock), organ, flute and guitar.. Classes/workshops include theory, music appreciation and field trips to the Nashville Symphony and Opera. Scholarships are available.

Our folk arts classes include the fiber arts (wool spinning, felting, knitting, crocheting, weaving), cheese making, beekeeping, and papermaking. The new culinary program offers classes for children, teens and adults, ranging from beginning cooking to gourmet, ethnic, special dietary needs, cake and gingerbread house decorating. Classes/workshops in the humanities are creative writing, languages (French and Spanish), and etiquette. Photography, health and wellness, beginning computer technology, and social networking round out the special interests area.

Summer camps are offered each summer in June and July, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday-Friday. In June, full weeks are offered in visual arts for beginner, intermediate and advanced arts for grades 2-8. "Discover Your Arts" week in July includes visual art, cooking, drama and music. A week of beginning sewing is offered in July.

Willow Oak is presenting a
Multicultural Arts Festival May 11 and 13, 2019 with
partial funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission.  On Monday, 400 eighth
graders will be bused in to enjoy dance by Shalom Movement Center, an art
project, and educational displays created by schools.  Saturday is free
and open to the public.  In addition to art, dance and displays will be
added food, face painting, balloon sculptures, music by the Willow Oak Children’s Choruses, and vendor booths.

Art in the Park came under the umbrella of Willow Oak Center for Arts & Learning in 2013. It is the premiere arts and crafts festival in Robertson County and was created in 2009 by artist/event director Jay Swafford. The free annual event is held the last Saturday in September at Springfield’s J. Travis Price Park.  Featured arts and crafts are handmade jewelry, wood working, sculpture, original paintings, photography, stained glass, Native American crafts, and much more. Average attendance is 4,000-5,000 with 70 vendors, food booths, and musical acts.

Master Artist Series Willow Oak is proud to offer the Master Artist Series with advanced classes taught by Wanda Choate , Artist, and Rebecca Sower, Classically Trained Artist. Classes cover technical sketching as well as painting with oils and acrylics. The knowledge and skill gained from the series will open doors of creativity and artistic technique. We are most fortunate to have such highly skilled artists to aid us in our individual endeavors. We look forward to presenting masterclasses with other guest artists and musicians.
