What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We raise funds to support cancer patients from the former Soviet Union who need access to latest treatments. We do this by: 1). contributing to the cost of bone marrow donor searches for patients with leukemia and other blood disorders; 2). paying for travel and lodging costs for patients who have to travel abroad to access treatment unavailable in their home countries; 3). Issuing $1000 grants to families of children with cancer. We also help patients get second opinions and consultations from experts around the world.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Bone Marrow Transplants

We raise funds to pay for donor searches for bone marrow transplants performed in St. Petersburg, Russia.  Russia does not have a sufficient bone marrow donor registry, and leukemia patients who need the transplants have to pay over $25,000 for the search for the donor abroad.

Population(s) Served

We support patients who have to travel outside of Russia or other former Soviet countries due to having high-risk and advanced cancers, and cannot be offered treatment in their native countries.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We assist cancer patients from Russia and other former Soviet Union countries who may lack opportunity to access latest treatments due to language barrier and unavailability of most effective medications in their home countries. Our goal is to help cancer patients in countries with less developed infrastructure have equal chances at accessing best possible care. By helping cancer patients understand their treatment options and possible ways to access them, we aim to improve their chances to beat cancer. Most of cancer patients who contact us have no options available to them in their home countries. We work hard to find treatment options that may be appropriate for our patients. We do that by arranging for consultations, reviews, enrollment in clinical trials and expanded access studies.

Our strategy is to attract volunteers and medical advisers to create a strong team of experts. We are also building relationships with medical groups and oncologists in the US and Russia to facilitate sharing of medical knowledge.

Our major partner is Advita Fund in St. Petersburg, Russia that refers us patients, connects us to local doctors, and provides other field support. We also benefit from being located in Houston and having connections to its outstanding medical community.

In our ten years of existence, we made a tremendous progress. We've developed a number of partnerships/relationships, grew our volunteer base, and, most importantly, helped hundreds of patients. Some of them were able to make correct treatment decisions and avoid risky or ineffective therapies. Others enrolled into clinical trials and achieved complete remissions as a result. Most are still in treatment stage, as cancer treatment often takes months and years. In focusing on patient assistance, we have not yet developed effective fundraising effort. Although our approach has always been to find solutions that are effective yet affordable for our patients, we are often asked to contribute to travel/lodging costs and other expenses. Fundraising effort is something we will need to develop next and we plan to use our success with patient assistance to grow financial support.
