Mission

A Hand for a Paw, Inc. is a Bridgeport, CT based, 501(c)(3) non-profit that is passionate about preventing animals from entering the doors of municipal animal control facilities. A Hand for a Paw seeks to eliminate animal suffering at its root. A Hand for a Paw provides mobile humane resources to the underserved communities in Bridgeport through our program, Mobile Pet Solutions, which assists pet families with affordable vaccines, micro-chipping, a pet food pantry, humane education, and access to affordable professional assistance. A Hand for a Paw also performs lectures on the subject of humane education, to date having spoken to thousands of people in the Bridgeport area.
Established in 2008, the founders of A Hand for a Paw are Jimmy Gonzalez, former Chief Animal Control Officer, and Melissa Kuian, former Animal Adoption Coordinator for the City of Bridgeport's Animal Control Facility. Their experiences managing the largest municipal animal shelter in the state for seven years was their motivation for establishing A Hand for a Paw. By ensuring that the residents of Bridgeport have access to basic veterinary care, and continuing to emphasize the importance of humane education, A Hand for a Paw has vowed to make responsible and compassionate pet ownership the standard in Bridgeport.

Population(s) Served

The Hand For A Paw Pantry program provides free pet food to low-income pet parents. One of the most common reasons for pet relinquishment is financial difficulty, and the Pet Food Pantry aims to help struggling Pet Mom & Dads keep their beloved pets home.
Our Pet Food Pantry program is supported through community donations and through the support of H3 Pet Supply, Choice Pet Food, & Pet Valu, PETCO and the Pet Outlet. Food is available on a first-come, first-serve basis until we run out. Pets must be spayed/neutered. Unfortunately, we're unable to offer specific brands, formulas or flavors.

Population(s) Served

The founders of AHFAP recognize that the only way to truly stem the tide of animal suffering and abuse is through humane education, particularly of our youth. The inhumane treatment of animals must be addressed in a proactive, rather than reactive, manner, if any significant change is hoped to be achieved. If children are taught proper respect for animals from a young age, they will be less likely to abuse or mistreat animals as adults.

A Hand for a Paw promotes humane education through speaking engagements and community visits.
