Mission

The Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation is dedicated to utilizing indoor/outdoor learning to provide young people with the knowledge and practical experience to sustain themselves and our planet. To achieve that goal, the Foundation has partnered with the region’s academic community to collaborate in leveraging the natural, historical and cultural resources of the Evergreen Heritage Center (EHC), as well as its members’ expertise in conservation, preservation, and education, to develop and provide environmental education programs and hands-on learning opportunities. The EHC, located on 130 acres in the heart of Western Maryland, is an historic Maryland property that pre-dates the Revolutionary War. It includes a 200 year old farm, over 100 acres of streams and forest that are under Forest Stewardship management, and an historic walking trail. The property is also adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage and Western Maryland Scenic Railway and within 45 minutes of Deep Creek Lake. The EHC Foundation and its partners use this scenic mountain location to teach and improve the lives of children and youth of all ages and circumstances.

Environmental Education

The primary goal of this program is to increase the number of children that are afforded hands-on environmental learning using the widely acclaimed, interactive, interdisciplinary activities developed for Project Learning Tree (PLT), an initiative sponsored by the American Forest Association that includes more than ninety activities.

Population(s) Served

Since 2008, the EHC Foundation has offered college students hands-on learning opportunities as part of their college course work.  This real world experience spans the fields of science, art, and business and can include projects in environmental analysis, painting, and marketing, and a myriad of other fields of study.  This experiential learning not only builds self-confidence and provides a marketable credential, but can offer students a competitive advantage when seeking employment.
