What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Bewildered and disoriented characterizes the state of parents raising children in an unfamiliar country, language and culture with a seemingly insurmountable bureaucracy. Often parents who couldn't cope with integrating into Israeli society could not help their children to do so. They experience the devastating pain of watching their child slip away. When a child is not flourishing, unhappiness and poor self-image leads to behavioral problems. Moreover, many educational authorities attribute the lack of proper treatment of learning disability challenges as one of the main factors in the youth-at-risk crisis in many communities throughout Israel.

It was reported by the Jerusalem Post on June 16, '15 that high schoolers who immigrated from North America are almost three times as likely to drop out of school than their Israeli-born peers, according to a report by the Knesset Research and Information Center.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Yedidim, through its professional mentoring program aims to restore the child's belief in him or her self. Every child should feel cared for and secure in the knowledge that he or she is special and valued. Knowing that there is someone that believes in them can go a long way in restoring their self confidence, in their belief that they can achieve and be successful in life, negating the need to look elsewhere for validation.

The Yedidim Parental Guidance Center aims to identify and address the needs and issues of every child that walks through its doors. When the issue is addressed and the parents are empowered to help their children overcome their struggles much hardship and heartache is avoided. The child will most certainly be on his way to a brighter and more promising future!

Yedidim's distinctiveness unfolds through a seasoned staff of professionals who train and supervise hand selected mentors who facilitate one-on-one, close, structured relationships with struggling children and teens throughout Israel. Mentors attend seminars and skill-building workshops in addition to receiving one-on-one guidance. Professional staff maintains contact with key members in the youth's landscape. This approach creates a circle of support that includes youngster, parents, educators and mental health professionals – overcoming emotional, social, educational and/or self-esteem difficulties.

Yedidim pairs up boys and girls with mentors who serve as "big brothers and sisters". A warm and caring relationship is developed. Through this special connection mentors are able to provide support, guidance and assistance. Most importantly though they work on restoring the child's self confidence through believing in the child and demonstrating that they indeed are important, special and valued. Additionally, they serve as outstanding role models, someone who the child can look up to, and say "This is the kind of person I would like to be"!

The Parental Guidance Center will conduct an initial evaluation to assess the child's needs and challenges. Based on their findings they will direct the parents to the proper resources that can best assist their child to overcome his/her challenges or difficulties. Addressing challenges in a timely fashion is one of the strongest preventative measures a parent can take to assure that their child will not turn towards risky behaviors. Additionally, we provide educational opportunities to parents to increase their awareness of issues their children may be confronting and provide them with the resources and tools to address them. We do this by offering numerous workshops, lectures and weekend seminars throughout the year.

Founder and Director of Yedidim, Rabbi Yaacov Goodman, spent seventeen years running youth programs, interacting with educators and counseling parents before founding Yedidim.

Yedidim has developed a professionally supervised mentoring program that is overseen by seasoned, highly qualified in-house staff of social workers and therapist. Our extensive database of talented mentors enables us to find the right mentor for each child. The professional supervision ensures that the child's needs are being met. Additionally, when complicated issues arise the mentor has an address to turn to for advice and guidance. Our capable back-end office staff expertly handle all matters to ensure the smooth running of the entire operation.

The Parental Guidance Center is staffed by highly qualified professionals with expertise in emotional, social, educational and school related issues. In addition, we have on staff an expert in the various education options available throughout the country for parent who need guidance in finding the proper framework for their child. Our dedicated staff make it a priority to follow up with parents to ensure that progress has been made and to see if any further assistance or guidance is needed. Our dedicated office staff set appointments and handle all technical issues to ensure efficiency.

To date we have serviced hundreds of children and provided them with essential support to help them rebuild their self confidence and set them on a path of success, personal fulfillment and happiness. We would like to expand our program to cover other geographical areas where we do not yet have a presence. This vision includes taking this extremely successful program and making it international. In addition, we would like to begin offering group mentoring opportunities and academic assistance programs to schools.

Hundreds of families have availed themselves of the services provided by our Parental Guidance Center. Numerous referrals where made and many families received the support, guidance and assistance they so desperately needed. Our vision is to expand these essential services to other cities and geographical areas.
