Mission

To ensure a healthy environment, vibrant communities and a strong economy for the San Diego Region, Equinox Center researches and advances innovative solutions to balance regional growth with our finite natural resources.

-Healthy Environment. We stand for stewardship of San Diego County's distinctive natural beauty and unique habitats: our land, water, climate, air quality, natural areas, beaches and our richly diverse ecosystems.

-Vibrant Communities. We believe in fostering inspiring places that people like to live, work, and visit; communities that enhance the health, safety, and quality of life of our diverse population, respect local culture, use resources wisely, and provide convenient, reliable transportation options.

-Strong Economy. We stand for a healthy, growing market economy that yields widely shared prosperity. It is open, competitive, accountable, transparent, and provides real opportunities for success in every neighborhood, while maintaining ample natural resources for future generations.

Inspired by these values, we are proponents for our region’s responsible growth and we support the conscientious care-taking of the natural and economic assets that we have inherited.

San Diego Regional Quality of Life Dashboard

The San Diego Regional Quality of Life Dashboard was initiated in
2009 by the Equinox Center to shine a spotlight on the questions that
truly matter to San Diegans. Recent growth projections indicate we will need to
accommodate another 650,000 people in the next 20 years. The Dashboard measures
progress on quality of life issues and identifies priority areas and what we
can do to improve. We update the Dashboard publication annually, and provide
more frequent updates on-line.

Decision
makers and media regularly turn to our “H2Overview”
policy brief series that includes reports on water pricing structures, the economics and energy costs of
current and potential sources of water for San Diego County, and the pros and
cons of recycled water and seawater desalination.Equinox will complete one more policy brief
on the potential of greater water efficiency in the San Diego region, which
also will build on our annual measurement of per capita water consumption in
the region published in our San Diego Regional Quality of Life Dashboard.Equinox research will be consolidated and
packaged for the collective impact water summits, and will be the starting
point for a new dialogue and plan of action around the future of the region’s
water supply.

Sustainability
Leaders 2020 is a group of young people (ages 20-30) that are
interested in developing a deeper understanding and personal engagement with
the issues on which Equinox focuses. The
initiative includes multiple components and benefits to its audience, defined through
input by the participants themselves including an exciting
social media campaign and interactive web content to engage Millenials in sustainability
issues through Equinox Center’s  research, periodic informal
get-togethers to assist members to speak
knowledgeably and persuasively and provide leadership on these issues in their
community or business, an annual
workshop to solicit Members’ ideas and
opinions on critical quality of life
issues that need to be researched or advanced as well as opportunities for cross-pollination among existing young
professionals groups, networking
opportunities, introductions to other regional civic, environmental and business groups in the
region.

Population(s) Served

Equinox Center will develop an
online video vignette series—“Traffic: It’s Personal,” “Water: It’s Personal,”
“Housing Affordability: It’s Personal,” etc.— featuring everyday San Diegans as
well as community and business leaders speaking about ways they have been
personally affected by key quality of life issues. Each month, Equinox will focus its communications outreach
on one of these themes and link them to key policy milestones, legislative
decisions or election debates and news coverage—i.e., opportunities for the
public to weigh in.
We will leverage the videos to
spark conversation and engagement via our website, blog and social media
channels YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. (Our website attracts more
than 7,000 unique visitors per year and our social media following is currently
650—already 225% higher than it was just six months ago. As part of this
program, we will focus on significantly expanding our audience size across each
of these platforms.)
