What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Open Shop

We provide tools and experienced mechanics to the general public to teach them how to maintain their bicycles.  This helps participants gain confidence in using their bicycle as their primary form of transportation.

Population(s) Served

In exchange for volunteering time at a local non-profit, earn-a-bike recipients can submit a request for a bicycle to use for their primary transportation.

Population(s) Served

During the 2009-2010 school year, we delivered bike safety programs to 1058 K through 8th grade students in the Fort Collins community.  In the coming 2010-2011 school year we will develop curriculum to train-the-trainer which will target more than 50 teachers and parents in the community. We are also slated to bring the SRTS program to 4 schools in the 2010-2011 school year.

Population(s) Served

In the first 6 months of 2010, we have recycled more than 4 tons of steel, 900 pounds of aluminum, 334 pounds of rubber and 184 pounds of household recycled items. The steel recycling alone represents about 40 bikes each month that were diverted from the landfill and fully recycled. These bikes are beyond repair due to rust or accident damage and are determined to be a safety hazard. The rubber recycling continues at no cost to the Co-op thanks to a generous arrangement with New Belgium to accept our tires and tubes for recycling.
