Volunteer Hose Company of Throop

The Volunteer Hose Company of Throop is one of two fire companies charged with protecting a borough
of the same name. Until 2021, a third fire company provided service as well. The remaining two borough
companies each operate with one engine company and one specialty piece. The specialty for the
Volunteer Hose Company of Throop is the operation of the borough’s rescue squad.
Throop is a borough in northeastern Pennsylvania that neighbors the City of Scranton (think “The
Office”). Incorporated as a borough in 1894, the history of the town revolved around coal mines. On
April 7, 1911, a fire at the Price-Pancoast Colliery killed 72 coal miners in what has been described as
“the most appalling mine disaster in the history of the northern anthracite coal fields.” Such industry has
since left the area, replaced with an assortment of light industry. The population for Throop stands at
4,065 as of the 2020 census, situated over 5 square miles.
