Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Women in conflict- Providing information and voice to women in Mali, Guinea and Sierra Leone
In October 2013, HUSA launched its first project in West Africa with support from the Ford Foundation, providing training to journalists and funding the production and broadcast of programming on local media in Mali, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Women and girls are uniquely and disproportionately affected by armed conflict. In post conflict and disaster settings, they often suffer from lack of security and are excluded from decision-making and participation in economic, social and political spheres. Journalism that accurately reflects the stories and concerns of women will challenge the tendency of the media in these countries to sensationalize or politicize reporting on women, especially on gender-based violence.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the quality and quantity of professional reporting on women’s issues. HUSA is working in partnership with Fondation Hirondelle and its media in Mali and Guinea, and with the University of Sierra Leone in Freetown.
Biodiversity and climate change mitigation in West and Central Africa through accurate broadcast journalism
Working through our existing media projects in the region, in Fall 2014 Hirondelle will launch a program to produce and broadcast radio programming that will provide a platform for engagement and debate at the local, national and regional levels. We will train and mentor a cadre of professional science reporters in the linkages between natural resource management, food security, and sustainable livelihoods so that they will have the necessary skills and tools produce accurate, fair, and rigorously researched reports. These programs will be broadcast across 5 radio networks, reaching approximately 20 million listeners daily.
Conservation and protection of the abundant natural resources and rich biodiversity of West and Central Africa’s forests is a vital part of ensuring peace and sustainable development in the region. These forest ecosystems are of global importance in terms of climate change mitigation, and are considered among the most biologically diverse in the world. Yet human intervention, often driven by poverty and civil conflict, has placed extreme stress on these unique and fragile ecosystems.
Media can play a key role in ensuring that local communities have the information and tools they need for effective stewardship of their resources, and that national and regional governments are engaged with, and accountable to, the populations they serve. However, the people living in the forest regions of West and Central Africa, as well as the ecologically fragile wetland areas of the Niger and Congo River basins – are particularly isolated, often cut off from vital news and information. Broadcasting locally produced programs in indigenous languages on FM and Shortwave radio, Hirondelle’s media networks are often the only broadcaster accessible to the communities on the “front line” of this environmental crisis.
