Therapeutic Riding

Flying Manes provides therapeutic riding lessons and equine assisted activities and therapies to individuals faced with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges in the New York metropolitan area.

Equine assisted activities and therapies are centered on the interaction between horse and human and use the tolerance and power of the horse to motivate participants to develop their full potential. Our program offers therapeutic riding lessons and other equine assisted activities in accordance with the guidelines and practices established by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NAHRA). Led by a NARHA-certified instructor and supported by dedicated volunteers, our program activities are aimed at teaching participants horsemanship skills and encouraging them to accomplish their physical, emotional, and social goals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Flying Manes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals faced with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges by providing the benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Flying Manes Therapeutic Riding is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) member center that offers weekly therapeutic horseback riding lessons and activities aimed at teaching the foundations of equine behavior and equine care.

Flying Manes Therapeutic Riding operates a weekly program at Riverdale Stables, a premier horseback riding facility in New York. Riverdale Stables is located on 21 acres in Van Cortlandt Park and features an indoor arena, several outdoor arenas, and immediate access to the trails in the park. Riverdale Stables makes a subset of its school horses available for Flying Manes's therapeutic riding lessons and equine assisted activities. Program activities are led by four PATH-certified instructors and supported by a group of fifty volunteers with a wide range of backgrounds reflective of the communities that live in the greater New York metropolitan area. Flying Manes has partnered with the New York State Institute on Disability to inform and refer prospective participants to our program.

Flying Manes Therapeutic Riding started with three weekly lessons led by one PATH-certified instructor serving twelve participants. The program aims to increase further the number of participants it serves by expanding program operations to additional terms and lesson days. Such expansion requires increasing the number of teaching staff as well as administrative capabilities, in addition to securing the availability of horses to support our program activities.
