Woody Biomass Production Trials

Establish 10-Acre
Production Trials to Evaluate and Demonstrate Short Rotation Woody Biomass
Management and Harvest Options

Key toward establishment of a short rotation woody biomass
supply in the Chequamegon Bay Region is private and public landowner knowledge
and planting of stands of hybrid poplar or other woody biomass crops. The Biomass Crop Assistance Program is a
potential funding source to assist landowners in establishing the crops and
managing them until the first harvest 6-10 years after planting. The BCAP dollars are anticipated to become
available during the winter or spring of 2010 and would provide assistance to
growers that want to plant in spring of 2011. By establishing production trials in 2010, we can get ahead of the
expected wider planting and can generate locally-specific knowledge and provide
demonstration and training opportunities for the growers.
