Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We are working to bring about a future in which psychopathy is better understood and recognized and has less of a negative impact on the families, friends, co-workers, and victims of psychopathic individuals as well as individuals with psychopathic traits themselves because of the establishment of:
• More widespread understanding of the nature of psychopathy and its impact on other people;
• More effective methods to help victims/survivors recover from traumatic relationships with such individuals;
• More effective methods to prevent or ameliorate the development of psychopathic traits;
• More effective methods to treat people with psychopathic features.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation's strategies for meeting our current goals are:
• Continue to improve the infrastructure of our organization, including through the recruitment of additional volunteers.
• Continue to educate the general public, professionals, and policy makers about the nature and impact of psychopathy.
• Continue to help individuals to make contact with knowledgeable professionals.
• Fund research to better understand the impact of people with psychopathic traits on others.
• Expand media visibility.
• Raise money to support our mission.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
In order to achieve our goals, the Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation:
• Prepares and presents workshops to educate psychologists, family court staff, child custody evaluators, and clergy about the impact of psychopathy;
• Presents webinars with psychopathy experts to the public through the Aftermath website;
• Provides access to valuable resources for educating the public about psychopathy;
• Evaluates research proposals and media content (e.g. books and films);
• Responds to requests for professional assistance with referrals to psychopathy experts where available.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation has:
• Written summaries of important research papers which are now posted on our website, along with webinars from psychopathy experts and novel resources for understanding and coping effectively with individuals with psychopathic traits that were written by psychopathy experts.
• Translated website materials into several languages, including Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Indonesian, and Catalan.
• Promoted new books and films about psychopathy that provide accurate information.
• Presented a Media Award to Jeremy Torrie for his documentary, The Psychopath Next Door, which premiered on CBC's DocZone in November 2014.
• Our effectiveness in reaching people is demonstrated by 113,361 unique visitors in 2015 with a total of 153,114 visits to our website.
The Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation has not yet:
• Given out research awards to honor graduate students who have made important contributions to understanding the impact of individuals with psychopathic features on others. As more of this research is being conducted, we expect the competition for these awards to increase.
• Raised enough money to award additional grants to continue to fund important research aimed at understanding and reducing the negative impact of psychopathy.
• Identified people who can translate resources into languages spoken in many parts of the world.
