V-NEP Programming Overview
The Veterans National Education Program (V-NEP) is the only known organization providing free educational materials to schools with a focus on our nation’s wars through the eyes of veterans.
Our goals are: Teach U.S. military history (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan) through the stories of those who have served; provide historically accurate and relevant materials to help students expand their knowledge base, develop vital critical thinking and decision-making skills and enhance their understanding of the United States most cherished values: honor, liberty and freedom; streamline early U.S. History materials to allow teachers ample time to teach U.S. Modern History; ensure educational materials fulfill state/national standard requirements; partner with entities that will help us fulfill our mission; promote national pride and bolster a positive national image of America's veterans.
V-NEP recognized a fundamental need for educators to have credible resources for teaching WWII to current day. Our team had produced 6 engaging military history films, each with lesson plans designed to teach the history of our country through the eyes of the veterans. Each film has a curriculum bundle: 5 lesson plans, film outline, worksheets, assessment rubrics and quiz. Through the films and lesson plans, students take an active part in learning history.
In late 2012, we introduced to our program a Global Awareness Map Initiative. Through the Global Map we present the cultures, geography and history of the 194 countries where the U.S. military serves or has strategic interest. Subject Matter Experts explain the cultures, terrain and significance of key geo-political events around the world. Currently, we have written materials for most countries on our Global Map, as well as 500+ video clips on 29 countries, 3 regions and 4 topics. Accompanying classroom discussion points are available on several 'hot spot' countries and topics. The Veterans National Education Program plans to continually populate the Global Map with film clips and materials.
V-NEP Materials available:
• 6 military history films with accompanying curricula bundles
• U.S. History II curriculum (12 units of instruction, aligned with PA State Standards)
• Global Awareness Map: 500+ short film clips, classroom discussion points
• National Middle School Cadet Corps (NMSCC) curriculum, requirement for 8th graders
• Hispanic Heritage and Republic of Korea Lesson Plans
