What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Storytelling and Bookmaking Field Trips

Storytelling and Bookmaking Field Trips are available, now virtually, to 3rd - 5th grade classes across the Twin Cities. Volunteers—including an illustrator—and staff work with student authors to complete and publish a book within two hours. We prioritize enrollment for schools with 51% Free and Reduced Price Lunch rates.

Population(s) Served

Trained volunteer tutors provide academic support and creative writing activities which lead to publication for K-12 students through our free after-school program open (now virtually) Monday - Thursday from 3:00 - 6:00. Creative writing by the young authors of ASWL is published through chapbooks and celebrated with community release parties twice annually.

Population(s) Served

In YABP, classroom teachers, volunteers, guest artists, and 826 MSP staff support students in the creative process of writing original works around a theme. Illustrators, designers, publishers, and printers collaborate with students to create a professionally published anthology each school year. Wise Ink Creative Publishing is our professional publishing partner, and we work with at least one guest artist for each YABP title.

Population(s) Served

Each summer, these workshops support students in writing original work around a theme while providing opportunities for collaboration between students, volunteers, and community partners.

Population(s) Served

This program is focused on youth-leadership skills building, civic engagement and writing enrichment for students in grades 6-12. Youth receive publishing opportunities and stipends for participation and service.

Population(s) Served

At our satellite location Writers’ Room at South High School in Minneapolis, students and faculty receive dedicated writing support from 826 MSP staff and volunteers through in-class tutoring, drop-in writing consultations, and the hosting of workshops, events, and author visits. Whether online or in-person, this is a dynamic and intentionally student-centered space which prioritizes accessibility for those who most need support and those whose leadership qualities are too often ignored, missed, or dismissed.
