Women's Hostel Project in Salleri, Nepal

In the Everest region of Nepal, seven out of every ten girls doesn’t get to go to college because of a lack of affordable housing for girls. The higher secondary school, located in the district headquarters, is too difficult to reach both geographically and financially. To address this issue, we are building a women’s hostel in the district headquarters of Salleri that will house approximately 40 female students per year.

Nepal is one of 189 countries committed to the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges. For this project, we are working to eliminate gender disparity in education at all levels by 2015 by examining the ratios of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education. Gender discrimination is prevalent at the secondary school level with more women dropping out due to early marriages and household obligations. In the Everest region, there are approximately 4,600 girls enrolled in 10th grade. According to a survey conducted in 2007, only 30% of the total girls pursue higher secondary education. While the need in Nepal for development projects is more pronounced, there is also significant need in the U.S. for Americans to serve abroad. As the United States continues to compete in an international economy that demands innovation, there is need for Americans to become more globally-minded. According to a 2010 study conducted by The Brookings Institution and Washington University in St. Louis Studies, research suggests that international service develops skills, mindsets, behaviors, and networks that prepare volunteers for living and working in a knowledge-based global economy. Many believe that even short-term experiences abroad can begin to prepare participants for longer-term engagement and future international service.

The Women's Resource Center in Naro Maru, Kenya is being designed and built with our partner ACCESS, which is a women's group of over 500 members. The project began with a pilot program of building a rainwater harvesting system at a school and a school-based garden to feed the children during their school-day. Now the project is working to build a Center where the women of ACCESS can receive their training in business, and launch their own entrepreneurial businesses.

Population(s) Served

After the earthquakes in Nepal the schools in the District of Solukhumbu were hit hard with over 250 being damaged or destroyed. Edge of Seven is putting in seven temporary learning centers and then committing to putting in seven permanent structures by the end of 2016 to begin the rebuilding process in Nepal.
