Mission

ALMA works with disadvantaged children in Latin America to strengthen communities and promote peace through music and arts education.

In many cases these children do not have access to the education that could open doors to success later in life and do not experience the joy and satisfaction of participating in artistic activities. ALMA’s goal is to provide them with tools to enrich their educational experiences through music and the arts.

ALMA’s projects encourage these children to succeed in all areas of education, giving them a creative outlet in order to strengthen their personal development, and thereby allowing them to later contribute to the development and peace of the region as a whole. ALMA’s projects aim to be programmatically and financially sustainable.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Colombia

Fundación ALMA’s programs in Colombia are based on our values of tolerance, creativity, development, and perseverance, and serve disadvantaged children affected by the country's armed conflict and pervasive violence.

The ALMA Colombia model involves local partnerships with two forms of institution: NGOs who already provide educational and other programs to disadvantaged children and do not have the resources to provide them with music or other artistic activities; and private schools who possess the facilities and other infrastructure necessary to provide such programs. ALMA works with these entities to provide the children from the local NGO with music and artistic activities in the facilities of the private school. ALMA provides organisational and financial support for a period of four years, at the same time planting the seeds necessary for the two institutions to continue the programs independently at the end of that period. The goal is to use existing resources from the two local organisations to create sustainable programs that further ALMA's mission of strengthening communities and promoting peace through music and arts education.

The children we work with live in situations that put them at risk of passing the time in ways that could be detrimental to their development. Our programs take place on Saturdays during the semester, and for four weeks during vacation, providing a safe and creative activity during spare time. Most importantly, our programs give the children an outlet that will encourage them to express themselves and become productive citizens of their communities. One of the following four topics is covered in each of four programs per year: Sustainability; Peace; Diversity in Colombia; and Global Diversity. At this time, our partner NGO is Fundación Promoción Humana, and our partner private school is El Gimnasio Campestre.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to make music and arts accessible to disadvantaged children in Latin America. We also aim to increase the children's understanding of development-related topics such as sustainability and peace, by using the arts as tools to teach these topics.

Each semester, our music and arts classes deal with a different theme. For example, one semester we deal with sustainability and the environment, so the children work with recycled materials to make art and instruments, and through the theatrical presentation, they learn why it is important to take care of the environment. The next semester, we deal with peace & coexistence, so the children discuss the root causes of violence in their community and consider the possible solutions to this violence. They also focus on teamwork activities so that they learn how to manage conflict without violence. The children improve their artistic skills, are able to express themselves, and gain knowledge and skills related to these development-related themes.

ALMA music and art teachers are some of the best in Colombia. In addition, ALMA's Director has experience in Peace & Development Education. Therefore, the Director begins each semester by doing a training session with the teachers so that they can incorporate the development-related themes into their plans for the art and music activities throughout the semester.

Every semester, the children demonstrate progress in both artistic abilities and development-related knowledge and skills.
