Mission

General Architecture Collaborative is a nonprofit architecture and landscape architecture design firm focused on housing, healthcare, and educational projects that serve underrepresented, vulnerable and developing communities. Our goal is to bring together individuals and organizations interested in contributing to innovative, impactful and empowering design projects that build sustainable and socially equitable spaces, with communities who might benefit most from these projects. We help funders navigate unfamiliar building processes and cultures, and work to ensure a community’s needs and aspirations are part of a collaborative process and reflected in the spaces we create.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We work to create spaces for vulnerable, under represented, and developing communities, groups that traditionally do not have the resources to engage in a thoughtful and research-based design process.

Masoro Health Center

The Masoro Health Center is a campus that offers a diversity of experiences, and provides our client-community with improved hygiene standards and efficiency of use. We use the site’s severe topography to our advantage by composing a series of terraces and ramps to differentiate the major functions found in a health center in Rwanda: curative services, administrative function, preventive care and maternity services. The result is a diverse experience where the interior and exterior spaces and pathways are legible yet integrated to provide accessibility and physical connection. The design provides spaces that vary in size and configuration, privileging the pedestrian, and provides a flexibility of use for current and future needs.

Population(s) Served
Adults

The Masoro Learning and Sports Center is a collaboration with Imbuto, a Rwanda-based nonprofit focused on combining continuing education with soccer for youth and young adults. GAC is designing and building a education and sports center in rural Rwanda. The Center includes classrooms, Computer training facilities, lecture and gathering rooms, a library, and outdoor meeting areas. The project also includes sports faculties for soccer (field, locker rooms, bathrooms, and practice spaces)

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to bring the value of design to communities with little access to it, creating innovative, sustainable and community-centered projects.

We work on each project by building a team of individuals and organizations committed to creating innovative practices, techniques, and design solutions for the communities we work with. This includes: working with local artists, crafts people and manufactures so that each project is environmentally and culturally rooted; researching emerging and sustainable building techniques and materials to create projects that are responsible and have longevity; and provide education in design and construction processes, so that each community has a greater say in how their built environment is made, now and in the future.

Founded in 2008, GA Collaborative is a group of design practitioners and educators with experience in architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design and the visual arts. We have been involved with projects in Albania, Bangladesh, Burundi, Haiti, Japan, Nepal, Rwanda, Uganda and the United States. Our projects have a broad range in scale, program and complexity.

We have completed a number of projects in Rwanda to date. These include the Masoro House and Jabana Houses. Both projects are community built residences which: uses local and sustainable building materials; passive heating and cooling methods; innovative construction processes; and local techniques of making. We have also completed a community meeting House, and most recently the Masoro Health Center. The Health Center brings access to health care and well being to rural Masoro, Rwanda. This project is a campus of interior and exterior spaces which provide examination rooms, testing facilities, spaces for teaching healthy food preparation, gardening, and hygiene, as well as offices for nurses and doctors. We continue to develop projects in Rwanda and in the USA focused on our core mission: design for all.
