aka Gambia Rising   |   Emeryville, CA   |  www.gambiarising.org

Mission

GambiaRising helps low-income Gambians to better themselves through their own work - primarily through scholarships and financial assistance to Gambian students, especially girls, who otherwise might not be able to stay in school. We work in all regions of the country, but with a focus on remote rural regions, with all ages of students, without regard to religion, gender, or tribal background. Our only criteria are character and need, and the amount of difference that our support will make in recipients' lives. Where the absence of a school was the main barrier to education, we have also funded construction of 5 rural schools, usually by providing materials for a village to build its own school. All staff are volunteers, so that 100% of donations directly support students.

Scholarships

When a young Gambian's family cannot afford the cost of school, GambiaRising tries to supply the necessary books and uniforms through grade 12. Past grade 12, we try to provide the opportunity for the top 1-2% of graduating students to continue to college or university, with a focus on studies that will serve a broader community, such as teaching and nursing.
