Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Annual Performance Schedule
The band regularly performs for various civic and patriotic events throughout the year. Annual performances include the Memorial Day Observance at the Liberty Memorial, Flag Day concerts across the metro including a major performance at the John Knox Village Pavilion, and multiple Veterans' Day performances across the region. For a complete schedule, please see our website: www.kclegionband.com.
American Legion Senior Band Competition
Military-style music was instrumental in developing the repetoire for the marching bands and concert bands of today. In furtherance of that tradition, the American Legion hosts a band competition as part of its annual convention. Concert and marching bands sponsored by the American Legion are eligible to participate. The bands are evaluated and ranked by notable collegiate-level/professional band directors. A small monetary award is presented to the top-rated bands and the honor of "National Champion" is awarded to the first-place band. The American Legion Band of Greater Kansas City most recently earned this honor in 2016, its 65th consecutive appearance in this competition - a testament to the band's dedication to perpetuating this important genre of music.
