What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Land Acquisition
ACRES Land Trust works with local landowners to permanently protect natural places and working lands by guaranteeing to never develop or transfer them. ACRES accepts land in three categories and most land acquired by ACRES is donated or sold at a deep discount.
Nature Preserves are places where nature is given space to thrive with minimal disturbance. ACRES helps families, individuals and communities preserve a variety of natural areas: forests, wetlands, native grasslands, unique geological formations and habitat for rare, threatened and endangered species.
Protected Lands are working lands and places with a designated use. ACRES helps people protect land for reasons beyond natural features: farmland, pasture, timber-producing forests, hunting land and multi-use land.
Transferrable Properties are places that are afforded no protection and are intended to be sold for financial gain, transferred or otherwise used at ACRES discretion.
Land Stewardship
Once permanently protected, the important work of caring for the land begins. This work includes invasive species control, reforestation, wetland restoration/creation, specialized habitat restoration, trail maintenance, plant inventories, marking and enforcing boundaries, research and more. This work is conducted by staff, volunteers, partners and contractors and is guided by the constant collection of data that helps the organization adjust its efforts in order to be the most efficient and effective.
Public Engagement
ACRES works to inspire people to value, appreciate and support natural areas and working lands by offering a wide variety of engagement opportunities. Events and outings are held year-round and include wildflower hikes, book discussion, concerts in the preserves and more. Staff and volunteers give public presentations to service clubs like local Rotary clubs, youth/scout groups, garden clubs and school groups. ACRES provides a variety of volunteer opportunities that range from field work to helping out in the office. Thanks to volunteer support, the group provides ~43 miles of trails across 31 different preserves in the region.
