What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Outdoor Education
Since 1998, The Wildlands Conservancy has been Southern California's leader in providing free outdoor education programs to urban youth. This has been accomplished by providing programs for approximately 30,000 children each year at our preserves and providing funds for nature-based field trips and a week-long outdoor science school for an additional 60,000 children each year.
Recently, Wildlands has expanded its educational programs to include outdoor oriented activities for families. Some of these programs include naturalist guided walks and hikes, after-school summer programs, stargazing, and many more.
Preserve Stewardship
The Wildlands Conservancy owns and stewards the largest nonprofit nature preserve system in California. Encompassing 163,000 acres across 21 preserves representing diverse mountain, valley, desert, river, and oceanfront landscapes. These preserves are open to the public free of charge for passive recreation, including camping, hiking, picnicking, birding, and more.
Conservation Projects
Many statewide and nationally significant conservation projects are given birth from The Wildlands Conservancy's preserves, which serve as outposts for strategic land-based conservation and stewardship.
The 60,000-acre Sand to Snow Wilderness Interface project gave birth to the 154,000-acre Sand to Snow National Monument.
Wind Wolves Preserve gave birth to a land acquisition effort to link the Coast Ranges with the Sierra Nevada.
The 560,000-acre California Desert Land Acquisition gave birth to the 1.6 million-acre Mojave Trails National Monument.
The Wildlands Conservancy's work in the Santa Ana River Watershed helped bring together cities and counties across Southern California to create the 110-mile Santa Ana River Trail and Parkway project.
The Wildlands Conservancy will continue to advocate for the land and help conserve California's heroic landscapes.
