Mission

The Alzheimer's and Aging Research Center is focused on Alzheimer's disease and other aging-related illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, arthritis and prostate cancer. Our mission consists of several components: funding research, educating the public, fostering scientific collaborations, and supporting the training and mentoring of students and scientists who are new to the field. The science we support is both the established, ongoing, highly promising work, as well as the more exploratory, "cutting-edge" research. We educate the public about these illnesses, we maintain a website, we ensure the production of written publications and oral presentations of the research that we have funded, we foster scientific collaborations across the world, and we provide training opportunities to students at all levels.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The major operating program at our Center is the funding of biomedical research programs. Related to this program is the ongoing, regular communication with the scientists themselves, in order to ensure that research results are being published in scientific journals or are being presented nationally or internationally at scientific conferences. We also assist the scientists in establishing collaborative efforts with others scientists who work in the same field, and we encourage the training and mentoring of students and scientists who are new to the field. Another program is the maintenance of a website, which includes general information about Alzheimer's disease as well as other aging-related illnesses, useful links to websites of interest, information about the scientists whose research we fund, and information about other research in the field. Our website experiences a high volume of "hits", meaning that hundreds of people are using the information we provide each day. We often receive requests for more information, to which we promptly respond.
