Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Wye River Upper School

Wye River Upper School offers a complete high school curriculum, inclusive of interscholastic sports, approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. We focus on small class size (avg. class size is 8), highlighted by individual laptops for students and faculty. Our students are impacted by learning differences, such as ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's Spectrum disorders. Many have experienced failure and frustration in larger school settings.

Population(s) Served

Wye River Upper School has purchased in 2010 a 1926 Armory building as the location of our permanent home.  With 22,000 sq ft, a gymnasium, stage and sufficient space for classrooms, the building offers the school all that we need to support 75-100 students.  The campaign to raise capital to complete the total renovation for the building has been underway since late 2010. As of Jan. 2012, we have $1.6 million in pledges and gifts.

Population(s) Served

Because of the population of students that WRUS serves, we are motivated to raise funds to support students with documented financial need.  Our students are those whose families typically do not plan for an independent school education, but instead find they must seek one out for their student who is otherwise at risk to fail or drop out of high school.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

By 2020, WRUS will have enrolled 65 students in our current and permanent facility.

Assure an experience that is outstanding for our students and their families.

By end of school year 2017-18, WRUS will enrich our current college prep program with a career readiness program, including work experience and student internships in a wide range of careers.

Eliminate building debt by 2020.

Launch and grow a planned giving program.

Sustain our current aggressive and effective professional development thereby strengthening and sustaining an experience of excellence for our students and their families.

- Improve and increase level of professional outreach/awareness of WRUS with constituents including elementary and middle schools, educational consultants, therapists, psychologists.
- Expand network in Central Maryland region - Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George's Counties
- Sustain and strengthen our foundation of strong student culture, strong professional culture.
- Create and publish a WRUS Portrait of a Graduate
- Update financial strategic plan for five years out inclusive of systematic formula based enrollment plan.
-

WRUS benefits from an active and interactive parent and student body, in full support of the program.

WRUS employs an administrative staff that is lean and mean, a Founding Executive Director who is actively and directly involved in Advancement, including enrollment management. A small administrative team is positioned to interact on an hourly basis with teachers and students, thereby raising awareness of program strengths and needs.

An aggressive professional development initiative enables faculty to maintain current knowledge of and implementation of best practices with direct and frequent supervisory feedback.

The WRUS Board, led by the Chair, is actively engaged in program development, and fundraising.

- Enrollment grew from 45 in 2015-16 to 49 in 2016-17

- A limited increase in number of workplace readiness experiences in 2015-16

- A renewed plan/activity to reduce building debt with moderate success by 12/16.

- Measurable progress toward internal marketing tools - Portrait of Graduate and updated website

- increase in # of new donors
