Mission

The Crew builds one home each year for an Appalachian family without the financial means to afford adequate housing. Our work is located in economically depressed McCreary County, KY. For over thirty years, the Crew has worked with the Good Shepherd Chapel of Whitley City, KY, who selects a family to receive the new home. Each June, the Crew builds a new home for a family living in a run-down and unhealthy house or trailer. Although the new home is our prime objective, more important benefits include setting an example of helping others and trying to heal a family. The Appalachian Construction Crew is a separate IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation since 1989.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Home Building for Needy Families

Each year, the Crew raises money for buying the required construction materials and crew logistics. Fundraisers include raffles, a bowl-a-thon, working concession stands and public donations. Then for two weeks in June, our on-site crew of 25 to 30 volunteers builds a home for one family. The program is not a free handout, since the families are encouraged to help build future homes in the Good Shepherd Chapel home building program. Thus a deserving family is given the financial means to obtain a good home and experiences America's dream of home ownership.
