Government Affairs and State Legislative Activity

According to scholar Dr. Michael J. New, AUL's crucial work in helping create parental involvement laws, informed consent laws, and limits on taxpayer funding of abortion has reduced abortions across the country by an estimated 25% since 1992, when the Supreme Court started allowing significant abortion restrictions. In 2006, AUL decided to make its legal knowledge accessible to pro-life legislators and activists across the country and published the first edition of Defending Life, a ground-breaking state-by-state legal guide to abortion, bioethics, and the end of life.  This book instantly become known as “the legal bible of the pro-life community" and AUL publishes an updated version on an annual basis.

Population(s) Served
Adults

AUL has long been on the forefront of winning the public debate for life, especially with our emphasis on abortion's harm to women and the need to protect women from a ruthless abortion industry. National media coverage offers the platform necessary to bring attention to the outrageous behavior of Big Abortion in America. This platform supports AUL's legislative strategy by bringing the truth about abortion's harm to women to the forefront of every American's mind. AUL's media interactions peel back the pro-woman facade of the abortion industry and reveal the underbelly of a profit-driven industry at sacrifices women's health and the lives of unborn babies for increased profit and political expediency.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

• Dismantling the Big Abortion Industry that is profiting at the expense of women.
• Raising awareness through media of abortion's harm to women;
• Laying the legal groundwork to overturn Roe.

AUL's strategy involves producing, distributing and enacting model legislation designed to save women and children from the destruction of abortion, assisting in the defense of such legislation when it is challenged in courts of law, and educating the public on the harmful impact of Big Abortion on women and its destruction on society. Our specific strategies in these areas are highly confidential due to the strong opposition we face from the Big Abortion Industry which seeks to profit off of women in a crisis pregnancy situation. Donors of AUL may request more information on our strategy by contacting AUL at 202-741-4902.

As its greatest resource, Americans United for Life has the best legal, legislative, policy and media experts on staff (see: http://www.aul.org/about-aul/team/). AUL also has the longest and richest history of any pro-life organization in the United States, have worked to defend life two years before Roe v. Wade was decided (See: http://www.aul.org/about-aul/history/).

AUL has been involved in enacting one third (representing 74 bills) of the surge of pro-life laws we have seen enacted since 2011. In 2014, Bloomberg declared, "Americans United for Life has been a driving force behind [this] surge, providing state lawmakers with templates to enact abortion restrictions." The impact of these laws has a dramatic effect on reducing abortion. Citing the passage of pro-life laws as a factor, the Centers for Disease Control reported a 5% decrease in abortions occurring in 2008 and a 3% decrease in 2009. Likewise, the Guttmacher Institute recently announced that abortions have decreased 13% from 2008, their lowest point since Roe v. Wade was enacted in 1973. According to Dr. Michael New of University of Michigan, legislative efforts to enact parental involvement laws, informed consent laws, and limits on taxpayer funding of abortions has contributed to a 25% nationwide decline in the number of abortions performed since 1992. (New, Michael. 2011. "Analyzing the Effect of Anti-Abortion U.S. State Legislation in the Post-Casey Era." State Politics and Policy Quarterly 11(1) 28-47.) AUL has also been involved in every U.S. Supreme Court case since Roe v. Wade and has had great success in assisting with the defense of pro-life laws in the Courts.
