COVID-19 Critical Response

Pilsen Alliance and allies supports and serves our hardest hit communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. We provide mutual aid support, including fresh food, emergency financial relief & tenants rights organizing trainings. Our work focuses on most vulnerable populations including senior citizens, people with disabilities, the homeless , undocumented immigrants and working class families to avoid displacement during the pandemic. Goals include preventing the displacement of long time residents in our community and to organize community stakeholders to demand housing justice policies that will benefit everyone in our communities.

Population(s) Served
Seniors
People of African descent
People of Latin American descent
Low-income people
Immigrants and migrants

The Pilsen Alliance holds true that housing is a human right. Our community has fallen prey to predatory land speculation and gentrification which has displaced many long time residents and triggered a spike in poverty and we are bringing forth to bear all of the organizing tools needed to wage a sustainable campaign for housing justice in Pilsen and the Southwest Side, including but not limited to: political education, youth organizing, direct actions, conducting accountability sessions with local officials and strategic partnership building.

Our Housing Justice advocacy includes.
*Tenant Organizing
*Homeowner property tax workshops
*Partnerships in Housing Justice Coalitions: Lift the ban on Rent Control IL and Our Home Chicago with the Chicago Housing Initiative
*Developing a community driven affordable housing plan to counter gentrification and displacement in Pilsen

Population(s) Served
Economically disadvantaged people

Pilsen Alliance works with parents, youth, teachers and community to address educational challenges and inequalities that disproportionately impact low income communities of color. We recruit and train leaders as part of our efforts to hold our educational leaders accountable to the community.

We also participate in several city-wide education coalitions that address systemic racism as it relates to public education such as the campaigns for:
1) An elected representative school board,
2) fully empowered Local School Councils,
3) The removal of SRO (School Resource Officers/ Police) from our neighborhood schools.

We work to advocate for access to mental health resources and we oppose austerity cuts that negatively impact the classroom and the families that rely on our neighborhood schools.

Population(s) Served
Parents
At-risk youth
Immigrants
People of African descent
People of Latin American descent
