ANIMAL EVAC VOLUNTEERS INC
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
When an emergency arises, residents may be stopped from returning home, or they may need help getting all their animals evacuated. Trained volunteers under the direction of Incident Management can help, if the situation is deemed safe enough.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Pet Evacuation Support
Support County personnel in evacuating pets whose owners were unable to evacuate their pets themselves (usually because they were caught away from home when the emergency occurred).
Public Outreach re Disaster/Evacuation Planning
AEV members spend considerable time at farmer's markets and other local community events, talking to the public about how to plan for an emergency evacuation and how to include their pets and livestock in those plans. Also, AEV educates the public about how to plan for a time when they might be caught away from home during an emergency.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
By being there to help people get their pets in emergencies, AEV decreases the temptation to stay in a dangerous area or to go back into a dangerous area to retrieve animals. This saves lives of residents and of responders who may be forced to try to rescue them. AEV also tries to educate as many people as possible about the importance of having a plan and realizing that, if an emergency occurs, they must be ready to act immediately.
In order to fulfill our mission, AEV's goals are to continue to train and keep current on the latest information about planning for and operating in an emergency.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Frequent, up-to-date training sessions for our members as well opportunities to take advantage of training programs offered by other organizations. Maintain close ties with local emergency management entities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
AEV's volunteers include veterinarians, vet techs, shelter volunteers and employees, as well as others who are generally comfortable handling unfamiliar animals. We spend a lot of time training our volunteers how to handle animals in stressful situations as well as reviewing emergency protocols such as radio protocols and the Incident Command Structure and other techniques to help them contribute in an emergency. We meet and train regularly to make sure that we are ready when an incident arises.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are at the ready to help in local emergencies requiring animal evacuations.
We also help elsewhere in the US, when called upon through our local emergency management authorities.
