Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Youth Development Goal:
Our YMCA aims to provide youth ages 6 weeks to 18 years of age with continual learning experiences in partnerships with caring adults to enable all children to realize their potential regardless of socioeconomic status, cognitive and/or physical disparities.
Healthy Living Goal:
Our YMCA aims to increase the number of families that live healthy lifestyles in the area of nutrition, fitness, and socialization.
Social Responsibility Goal:
Our YMCA aims to give individuals and corporate citizens meaningful and diverse opportunities to serve their community effectively and consistently.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Youth Development Strategies:
We will...
A. Improve program quality by integrating program quality/impact evaluations into existing core Y youth programs. Then we will identify our community's youth needs and modify programs accordingly.
C. Increase the number of youth served. We will expand number of program sites for existing programs and create new youth programs in alignment with identified community needs.
D. Increase the number of program partners providing in-kind and cash resources to eliminate economic barriers for participation.
Healthy Living Goal Strategies:
We will...
A. Provide intergenerational, and age appropriate programming opportunities for families.
B. Increase the number of program partners to ensure low to moderate income families have access to Y services
C. Insure all Y programs are HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) compliant as prescribed by the National Afterschool Association congruent with the Children's Nutrition Act.
Social Responsibility Strategies:
We will...
A. Provide and promote meaningful volunteer opportunities consistently
B. Recognize volunteers for their service
C. Promote civic engagement
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The breadth and depth of the YMCA illustrates our capabilities to meet our community goal. Our breadth can be measured by the presence of our facilities and our people throughout metropolitan Detroit. We operate 10 community wellness facilities, 2 resident camps and 5 non-facility YMCAs entrenched in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Livingston counties. We have over 1500 volunteers, 1000 seasonal part time staff, 150 full time staff and dozens of community partners ready to serve the community.
Our depth is simply demonstrated by the more than 165 years we have existed in metropolitan Detroit. Our strength is rooted in our membership of more than 100,000 people in our region.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2015 the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit raised over 3.5 million dollars in grants and contributions to help more than 2000 children and families nurture their potential. This includes children with special developmental needs. We served over 200,000 healthy meals and snacks to school age children, provided over 1500 children with swim lessons, arts classes, summer day camp, resident camp, summer employment, after school programming and so much more. We provided fitness programs for first responders, senior citizens, and military families. We engaged over 1500 volunteers as coaches, tutors, mentors and more. Our work through partnerships with local community service organizations such as Gleaners and municipalities such as the cities of Southgate and Detroit ensure that metro Detroiters , especially our children live healthy lifestyles filled with healthy foods, physical activity, caring adults, safe places, and continual learning opportunities after school, weekends and summers.
