What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Acton Institute organizes seminars aimed at educating religious leaders of all denominations, business executives, entrepreneurs, university professors, and academic researchers in economics principles, and in the connection that can exist between virtue and economic thinking. We exhort religious leaders to embrace the principles of economics as analytic tools in the consideration of economic issues that arise in their ministry, and we exhort business executives and entrepreneurs to integrate their faith more fully into their professional lives, to give of themselves more unselfishly in their communities, and to strive after higher standards of ethical conduct in their work.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Vision of the Acton Institute is to be the most respected intellectual resource and recognized expert authority worldwide on the interplay between theology and economics evidenced by leading international civic, business, academic, and religious leaders seeking out our effective educational programs, publications, advice, and comments.

Ideas can have good consequences. The world is full of ideas - unfortunately, many are bad and others never see the light of day. To be successful in the marketplace of ideas, Acton's approach includes three main goals. First, start with the right ideas, which for Acton is a combination of theology and economics. Second, target and influential audience, in our case, religious leaders and influential believers who hold moral authority and have large teaching platforms. Finally, we create value with a strategy that leverages our unique ideas, comprehensive programming and competitive advantage.

Due to the specialized nature of our work, there are few nonprofits in the world that compete with us directly. At the same time, this missional diversity allows us to reach out to multiple audiences -- clergy, lay leaders, businesspeople, nonprofit adminstrators, graduate students -- in a way that few other organizations can. Crossing all denominational lines, Acton's products and programs teach free enterprise and free-market economics to people of myriad backgrounds and professions, empowering them to help their own communities with policies that are both proven and effective.

Over our nearly 30 year history, the Acton Institute has reached millions with our message of free markets, limited government, and a virtuous civil society. We published nearly a dozen books in 2017, for example, Foundations of a Free & Virtuous Society, which outlines a systematic case for human-centered freedom as the foundation for societal flourishing. This year’s Acton University drew from a pool of over 2,000 applicants from 94 countries, and ultimately welcomed 1,009 attendees. The conference gave Acton unparalleled access to influential academic, business, and religious leaders who are poised to promote our message of freedom through their work for decades to come.
We recently launched our latest film series, The Good Society, which delivers a persuasive overview of Acton core principles. Coupled with an updated website and enhanced podcast offerings, Acton is able to provide high-quality content to general audiences, supplementing our long-running work with leveraged leaders.
